THE NEW SCOTS COOKBOOK is about Recipes Sharing and cultural exchange with the Wednesday Women’s Group of Milk Cafe. The project features three artists to focus on the living situations of a small group of female New Scots of Milk Cafe via the lens of food, life Journeys and culture through hospitality. With a series of creative workshops in Milk Cafe, the curator seeks to foster understanding and cultural appreciation by engaging Wednesday Women's Group in collaborative recipe sharing, food preparation, communal dining experiences, and oral history telling.
As a visual designer, my role was to collate the results of a series of workshops and visualise them into a publication, as well as designing posters for the launch of publications and documentaries. Among the series of workshops curated by Yvonne, artist Asya's workshop was about the Italian food Bomboloni, a snack made from deep-fried dough, and I set the main visual tone to be the burnt yellow colour of this street food. Yvonne wanted to "give this publication as a gift to everyone who participated in the workshops", so we decided to package the whole publication like a bakery takeaway box, with the idea of making the publication itself a small exhibition. In terms of materials, I chose visually uniform but slightly different recycled papers for several different workshops, hoping that the texture of these papers would bring a handmade feeling.
